BBC iPlayer when you’re away from the UK
This guide is for people who live in the UK and are on holiday or away for a while. BBC iPlayer checks where your internet connection appears to be. Outside the UK, it shows a message that it’s only available in the UK. With Stealthy PRO’s United Kingdom location, your browser connects through the UK.
Away from the UK? Pick United Kingdom in Stealthy PRO and open BBC iPlayer in your browser.
$4.99 a month billed yearly, or $9.99 month to month. Start the trial with a card or PayPal; after 3 days it becomes the plan you picked unless you cancel first. Billed in US dollars.
Watch in your browser with Stealthy PRO
- Get Stealthy for your browser.
- Sign in once with your PRO login in the Stealthy panel. In Firefox, sign in in Stealthy’s Settings.
- Pick UK under Location.
- Open BBC iPlayer and sign in with your BBC account.
Pick UK under Location. If the panel offers Switch to United Kingdom, that picks UK and reloads the page.
Stealthy works in your browser. The iPlayer app on a phone or tablet doesn’t use it. For apps, use PRO’s VPN with uk.stealthy.co (set it up). TVs connect through a router (Help).
Ads: BBC iPlayer has no adverts, and it plays with Block ads and trackers on or off.
Streaming services set their own rules and may refuse a connection at any time.
Before you go: what TV Licensing and the BBC say
TV Licensing says:
You must be covered by a TV Licence to download or watch on BBC iPlayer, wherever you are. This applies to any device you use, including a TV, computer, tablet or phone.
At the moment, you aren’t able to stream or download programmes on BBC iPlayer while abroad. But you’re covered to access programmes that you’ve downloaded before going overseas (usually available for 30 days after they’re shown on live TV).

The BBC says:
Due to rights agreements, you need to be in the UK to stream and download programmes or watch BBC TV channels on BBC iPlayer.
While we are interested in being able to allow UK licence fee payers to access BBC iPlayer when they are abroad, there are complex technical issues to resolve which we are investigating, and it will be dependent on what legislation is in effect in the UK in the future.

“It says I’m outside the UK”: checklist
Outside the UK, iPlayer shows:
Sorry, BBC iPlayer isn’t available in your region. It looks like you’re outside of the UK. BBC iPlayer is only available in the UK. If you are using a proxy or VPN, please turn off any of these services and try again.
Work through these in order:
- Is Stealthy on, and on UK? Open the panel: it should say United Kingdom.
- Was your PRO sign-in refused? If the panel says your PRO sign-in failed, fix your login in Settings, then pick UK again.
- Does the panel say “United Kingdom is unavailable right now; you’re connected through ...”? The UK server couldn’t be reached, so Stealthy connected you through another PRO location. Try UK again in a few minutes.
- Is another VPN or proxy running? Turn it off. Two at once can show the wrong location.
- Are you in the iPlayer app? The app doesn’t use Stealthy. Use iPlayer in the browser, or PRO’s VPN.
- Reload the tab. A page opened before you switched still has the old location.
- Turn Stealthy off and on again, then reload.
- Sign out of iPlayer, clear the BBC’s cookies, and sign in again. See Help: a TV service won’t play.
- Turn Block ads and trackers off and reload, to rule it out.
- Still stuck? Visit Help.
Live TV and downloads
- Live channels need the same TV Licence cover as programmes.
- Downloads: TV Licensing’s rule above applies. The BBC says:
Downloaded programmes can only be accessed on the device they’ve been downloaded to, and they expire at the same time as their online versions, so make sure you watch your downloads before they expire.

Questions
Do I need a TV Licence to watch iPlayer abroad?
TV Licensing says you must be covered by a TV Licence to watch or download on iPlayer, wherever you are. Read their page for your situation.
Why does iPlayer say I’m outside the UK on holiday?
It goes by where your internet connection appears to be. Use the checklist.
Does it work in the iPlayer app?
Not with the browser extension. Apps on phones and computers can use PRO’s VPN; TVs need a router set up with it (Help).
What if my PRO sign-in is refused?
The panel says your PRO sign-in failed. Check your login in Settings, then pick UK again, or renew PRO.
Can I use the free location?
No. United Kingdom is a PRO location, and the free location doesn’t let you choose the country.
Does one PRO login cover my phone and laptop?
Yes. One PRO subscription covers every device you personally use: the browser extension on your computer, and PRO’s VPN on your phone or iPad (see the set-up guide). See Help: using several devices.
What if a service still won’t play?
Work through the checklist on this page. PRO also has a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Streaming services set their own rules and may refuse a connection at any time. Need a hand? Visit Help.
